Highlights

2-days demanding hike from fjord to fjord over Folgefonna, Sundal-Odda. Accommodation in DNT cabin.

About the hike

The hike has amused tourists for hundreds of years. From the summit of the glacier, you can see the Hardangervidda plateau in the east and the North Sea in the west to the south; the Rosendal Alps. During the entire 19 century and until the First World War, people from all over Europe carried by horseback from the fjord to the edge of the glacier whereas the transport across the glacier was done on horse sledges. In the mean time their luxury Yachts sailed around the Peninsula to welcome them at the opposite side of the glacier in Odda.

Today there is a road tunnel beneath the glacier that makes the return much easier either by public bus or by taxi (20 min). Normally our guests hike from Sundal to the DNT cabin Fonnabu on their own. The hike starts along the "Ice-road" in the great Bondhus valley, continues along T-marked path from Bondhus valley to the DNT cabin Fonnabu. After a fantastic evening and night at Fonnabu, our glacier guide are ready next day at 09:00 to guide you over Folgefonna from west to the north east side of the glacier where the DNT cabin Holmaskjer is situated. Included in the guided glacier hike is all necessary glacier equipment. After a lunch stop at Holmaskjer you can hike down to Odda and can catch a public bus back to Sundal. If weather or snow conditions are not good, we may have to adjust the route. The total hike for you is 2-days, the guiding with us is 3-4 hours and the easiest part of the hike. Glacier hike is about 6km in length and about 200 meter height difference.

To be able to arrange this tour we require minimum payment for 5 people. 5- days before the hike we consider the weather forecast and check if we have enough people booked and decide tour or not. If hike is canceled you can choose 100% refund, or change to one of our other hikes.

Please note, beside booking the guided hike from us, we recommend to book place on in the Fonnabu cabin, for bed booking , go here

Weather

This hike demands good weather. If wind are stronger than 15 m/s we normally cancel. Rain and fog is normally not a problem, but of course this tour is best when having the world class panorama view and feeling of being on top of Norway when crossing the glacier. Alternative if weather is bad is the Blue Ice Hike, or only hike to Fonnabu and return to Sundal again next day.
