Weather

The hike can be arranged and are magnificent in all kind of weather. The weather is a part of the glacier experience, hike will be adjusted after the weather conditions. But of course the panorama view is not there if the weather is foggy, but then you get a closer relationship to the landscape right around you. Proper clothing is extra important if it's raining or temperature is low. Normally strong wind and thunder storms with lightning are only reasons we need to cancel due to weather conditions. In general temperature on the glacier can be from 2-15 degree Celsius. Please note that you need sunglasses and sun lotion even on grey days.

What if it is raining?

The glacier hikes are arranged in all kind of weather. Rain normally don't stop us. The weather is a part of the glacier experience. Good clothing is important to make sure you don't get cold. The colors in the ice can be even more fantastic in rain, but of course if we can choose we prefer the sunny days. Strong wind make it harder to arrange the tour, so if wind is strong and direction not ideal we may have to cancel the tour for safety reason. Then you will get refund if you are not able to switch date.

Which hike is best for families?

The Blue Ice Hike in Juklavass glacier and Panorama Glacier Hike can be adjusted for everyone from 7 years old. But, our experience is that the children need to be motivated their self to enjoy it. So do not book hike if your children don't want this at all. On all tours we adopt the level of hike after the participants, we can regulated the length and the challenge for the hike. When having Privat guide we can tailor made hike 100% for your family, so this is of course the best option. For families with children younger than 10 years old this is the only options. We do not allow children younger that 10 years old to participate on the "daily hikes".

Can I use my own mountain boots?

We have over 150 pair of mountain boots in sizes from 33-48 (EUR) which are designed for glacier hiking/climbing. This means the sole are stiff and they have good support around the ankle. Good boots are important for the safety, so we do not charge any extra for the boots, it's included in the price to borrow boots. Of course we understand if you prefer to use your own boots if you have, and as long as they are good enough you are welcome to that. Bring them, and the guide will check them and give you the best advice. Note: The crampon/spike we install under the boots can scratch the surface of the boots.

What is the cancellation policy?

We try to be as flexible as we can. For the daily hikes "Blue Ice Hike" and "Panorama Glacier Hike" you can cancel until 24 hours before the hike and get 100% refund or change the tour date. Cancellation or no show later than 24 hours before hike does not give a right to a any refund. For all  other hikes/tours we offer, the cancellation deadline of 5 days before the tour date applies unless otherwise agreed. That means, if you can cancel 5 days before the hike you will get a full refund. If you cancel later than this but before 24 hours before the hike, there is a 50% refund, if canceled less than 24 hours before the trip, there is no refund. If Folgefonni Breførarlag has to cancel the trip due to weather / conditions, you will get 100% refund.

Where and when do I meet for the Panorama Glacier Hike?

The Panorama Glacier Hike starts at 11:00 from our guide shop in Fonna Glacier Centre at Fonna Glacier Ski resort. You do not have to be there before 11:00, but normally our guides are there from 09:30. If you are too late please let us know.

What else to do in the region?

Fjords, mountains and glaciers. Waterfalls, hundreds of thousands of fruit trees and vibrant villages. The Hardangerfjord - the third-longest in the world - contains the best Norway has to offer. With a rich food and cultural history, world-renowned icons and unique nature experiences, it is easy to understand why Hardanger has been a popular destination for hundreds of years. The region, with the municipalities of Kvam, Eidfjord, Kvinnherad, Ullensvang and Ulvik, is an eldorado that is difficult to describe in words. You have to experience it for yourself. Please check Visithardangerfjord for more information.
