Glacier moulin

Deep within the glacier, where meltwater has carved a vertical shaft through centuries-old ice, glacier guides recently descended into one of Folgefonna's most fascinating natural formations: a glacier moulin.

What they discovered was a world of colour, light and ice unlike anything seen on the surface.

The descent began at the edge of a narrow opening in the ice. As the guides carefully lowered themselves into the moulin, the daylight gradually transformed into a glowing palette of intense blues, turquoise tones and shimmering white ice walls.

"Every metre revealed new colours and structures," said one of the guides after the exploration. "The pressure inside the glacier creates incredibly hard ice. The walls were polished and sculpted by flowing water over many seasons."

A glacier moulin forms when meltwater from the glacier surface finds a weak point and drills its way downward, creating a natural shaft that can extend deep into the ice. These formations are constantly changing, making every exploration unique.

During this particular descent, the team reached the limit of their equipment before reaching the bottom.

"Our rope is about 60 metres long, but even at that depth we could not see the bottom of the moulin," the guides explained. "The darkness continued below us, disappearing into the glacier's hidden drainage system."

The experience offered a rare glimpse into the powerful forces that shape Folgefonna from within. The combination of immense pressure, moving water and ancient ice creates formations that few people ever have the chance to witness.

For glacier guides who spend much of the summer on the ice, discoveries like this remain a constant reminder that the glacier still holds many secrets beneath its surface.

The photographs from the expedition capture some of the moulin's extraordinary beauty, revealing luminous blue chambers and ice formations carved by nature's own hand over decades and centuries.

While visitors usually experience Folgefonna from above, explorations such as this highlight an unseen world hidden beneath the glacier: a place of deep shafts, roaring meltwater and spectacular colours that challenge imagination.

The bottom remains unknown. The colours remain unforgettable. And somewhere beneath the glacier, the water continues its journey through the heart of Folgefonna.
