Folgefonna has always been more than just a spectacular natural landmark. Glaciers are widely recognized as some of the world's most important climate indicators. Their size and shape respond directly to changes in climate, and today we are witnessing these changes faster than ever before.

For those of us who work on and around Folgefonna every day, the transformation is impossible to ignore. Since around 2002, we have observed a dramatic retreat and melting of the glacier. While scientists have long predicted that a changing climate would impact glaciers, seeing these changes unfold before our eyes is both remarkable and sobering.

The rapid loss of ice is a powerful reminder of the environmental changes taking place around the world. Areas that were once covered by thick glacier ice are now exposed, revealing landscapes that have remained hidden for centuries. New rock formations, meltwater streams, and untouched terrain are emerging as the ice retreats.

There is, however, a certain fascination in exploring and understanding these newly uncovered landscapes. They provide a unique opportunity to witness nature's ongoing transformation and to learn more about the forces that have shaped this region over thousands of years.
