Main season

Summer at Folgefonni – The Main Season Has Begun!

The summer has arrived, and with it the start of our main season here at Folgefonni! We are excited to welcome visitors to a full program of glacier adventures, scenic experiences, and easy access from Bergen and the Hardanger region.

From June 22nd, we offer daily bus connections to and from Bergen for our popular Blue Ice and Panorama glacier hikes. This makes planning your visit simple and convenient—whether you’re staying in the city or exploring Western Norway, you can easily join a guided glacier experience in just one day.

At the glacier itself, our Guide Shop at the Folgefonna Glacier Centre is now open daily. Here you can meet our guides, get information about the tours, and prepare for your adventure before heading out onto the ice.

Daily Adventures on Water and Ice

Our unique and highly acclaimed Glacier Kayak tours are also running daily from Rosendal. These guided trips give you a rare opportunity to paddle along the glacier’s edge, surrounded by dramatic landscapes of ice, mountains, and calm waters—a truly world-class experience.

Whether you choose to explore on foot or by kayak, all our tours are led by experienced and certified guides who ensure both safety and unforgettable moments.

Safety Comes First

Your safety is our top priority on all our tours. When joining a glacier hike or kayak experience, you are equipped with professional safety gear suited for the conditions.

For glacier hikes, this includes:

  • Crampons for secure grip on the ice
  • Ice axe for stability and control, and for possible climbing
  • Harness and rope systems for safe glacier travel
  • Helmet for protection

Our guides provide a full safety briefing and instructions before every tour, and all equipment is carefully maintained and regularly inspected.

For Glacier Kayak tours, we provide:

  • Stable, high-quality kayaks
  • Dry suits/protective clothing adapted to glacier conditions
  • Life jackets and essential safety gear

We recommend all guests dress appropriately for mountain conditions, including sturdy footwear, warm layers, and wind- and waterproof clothing—even on sunny days.

Tips for First-Time Glacier Hikers

If this is your first time stepping onto a glacier, you’re in for a truly unique experience! To make the most of your adventure, here are a few helpful tips:

  • Dress in layers: Weather conditions can change quickly on the glacier. Bring warm, breathable layers and a windproof clothing (can be rented).
  • Wear sturdy footwear: Hiking boots with good ankle support are essential for comfort and safety when using crampons. Included in price is moutain boots if you do not have your own.
  • Bring sunglasses and sunscreen: The sun reflecting off the ice can be intense, even on cloudy days.
  • Stay hydrated and energized: Bring lunch packet, water and some snacks to keep your energy up during the hike. Lunch packets can be prebooked.
  • Listen to your guide: Our guides are highly trained and know the glacier well—follow their instructions for a safe and enjoyable experience.
  • Take your time: Glacier hiking is not about speed. Move steadily, enjoy the surroundings, and take in the incredible views.

With the right preparation, glacier hiking is accessible to most people and an unforgettable way to experience Norway’s natural beauty.

Stay Longer – Experience More

While many visitors join us for a single day, we highly recommend spending a few days in the area to fully enjoy everything Folgefonni has to offer.

Combine several activities for the ultimate adventure:

  • Walk on the glacier with our Blue Ice or Panorama hikes
  • Paddle a kayak in a glacier lake, starting from Rosendal
  • Rent an electric bike and ride from the fjord all the way up towards the glacier

This combination provides a unique journey through Norway’s spectacular contrasts—from sea-level fjords to the vast Folgefonna ice cap.

With daily transport, a wide range of guided tours, and our facilities open every day, everything is set for a fantastic summer at Folgefonni. Whether you’re seeking adventure, nature, or simply a memorable experience, we are ready to welcome you.
